Music Style - Contemporary Hawaiian Music, Slack Key (Mixture of Hawaiian & English Lyrics)

Honolulu City Lights continues to be one of the best selling Hawaiian releases of all time. If you do not have this CD in your collection, drop everything you are doing and go out and buy it! Released in the late 1970's, this CD contains several contemporary classics including the title cut and Only the Good Times. It is arguably one of the best Hawaiian albums ever released, winning 5 Hoku awards in 1979.

Where should I start? This is one of those rare CD's that does not have a bad cut on it. It opens with the title cut that to this day gives most people chicken skin when Keola performs it in concert. Honolulu City Lights brilliantly portrays the loneliness one can experience upon being away from Honolulu. This song has been performed and recorded by many Hawaiian artists over the last 20 years and is an absolute classic. The title cut is followed by Kaliponi Slack Key, which is a wonderful slack key mele that many in Hawaii may recognize as the Channel Two News theme song.

Another one of my contemporary favorites on the CD is Love You All the Time which is a soothing mele about the love one has for a women. It is followed by Kamakani Ka Ili Aloha, which offers the wonderful Hawaiian vocals and harmony that the Beamers are known for. Seabreeze also provides brilliant harmonies with Hawaiian & English lyrics. Backed by beautiful strings, it is probably my second favorite mele on the CD behind the title cut. Please Let Me Know is a relaxing love song that should be shared with your significant other in your arms while you are sitting enjoying a Hawaiian sunset. It makes me feel romantic every time I hear it. I am listening to it right now while I write this....time to go kiss da wife! The CD closes with Only the Good Times which has been popular on the islands for years.

Honolulu City Lights won the following 1979 Na Hoku Hanahano awards:

The CD contains the following:

This is a 5 coconut CD, a 'must' addition to your Hawaiian Music collection. A special 20th Anniversary Limited edition version of the CD was released in 1999. If you don't already own a copy of this CD, you'll want to pick it up from one of the retailers on our Sources of Tapes & CD's page.
