Music Style - Mixture of Traditional and Classic Contemporary Hawaiian Music

If you ever wanted to experience a live concert with some of the greatest Hawaiian Musical Artists of all time, the Waimea Music Festival is the CD for you. Recorded in 1974, this CD contains classic performances by Gabby Pahinui and his band, Auntie Genoa, the Sunday Manoa (Peter Moon and the Brothers Caz), Sonny Chillingworth, and several other notable performers. Studio recordings are fine, but there is nothing quite like listening to Hawaiian Music live. Panini Records brought in one of the best recorders of live music available, the Wally Heider Recording Crew from Los Angeles. The results are phenomenal. Whenever I put this CD on, I feel like I'm sitting in the audience. When the music gets lively, the audience really whoops it up Hawaiian Style. Put on some headphones, close your eyes, and you'll think you're right there. You can hear the audience yelling out requests, cheering on their favorite performers, and suckin' it up.

There are so many classic meles on this CD that its hard to pick out a favorite. On of my favorite slack key guitar classics of all time, simply called Slack-Key Instrumental #2, is played by Fred Punahoa while people in the audience yell out 'play it on, brudah', 'suck em up!'. Gabby's Hawaiian Band jams through some of their all-time classics including Livin' on a Easy, Hiilawe, and Panini Pua Kea. When Na Leo O Nuuanu plays Maori Brown Eyes, I'm in Hawaiian Music heaven. I love this mele. The Sunday Manoa provide 3 classics including the absolutely beautiful A Hawaiian Lullaby (Remember 'Where I live, there are Rainbows'?). Uh, oh, there I go again...gotta love this one too!

Of course we can't forget Sonny Chillingworth whose unforgettable deep voice graces us with 3 meles including the Portuguese Folk Song and Waimea Cowboy. The CD ends with a number of meles by the greatest Hawaiian female performer of all time, Auntie Genoa Keawe. No one can hold a note like Auntie Genoa, and she proves it in Mama E. I'd be passed out and in the emergency room on a resuscitator if I tried to hold a note like that! Her music is so fun to listen too and is backed with such lively slack key that it gets you ready to dance in the aisles. Kuu Lei Hoku is one of my favorites. Look out, I'm getting happy feet...I have this mele playing right now as I type this review.
