This award is presented for the best acheivement in creating a new song or chant exclusively in Hawaiian. The panel that judges eligible songs is composed of experts fluent in Hawaiian and accomplished composers of Hawaiian-language music.

** In 1980 the award was "New Hawaiian Song of the Year".
